Turbulence in Cardiovasular Flows

Cardiovascular diseases such as aortic stenosis and aneurysms are closely linked to disturbed flow patterns and wall shear stress (WSS) oscillations, which play a key role in disease progression. Identifying the turbulent flow structures responsible for high WSS is crucial for understanding and predicting these pathologies.

In this project, we apply FELiCS to conduct resolvent analysis of time-averaged flow fields, enabling the identification of coherent structures that contribute to high WSS in stenotic vessels. FELiCS offers a powerful approach to studying these flow structures and their amplification mechanisms, providing deeper insight into their role in vascular remodeling.

The methodology integrates 4D Flow MRI data, Large Eddy Simulations (LES), and Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to correct flow data and reduce noise. Resolvent analysis, performed with FELiCS, is then used to identify the dominant flow instabilities responsible for WSS oscillations across various frequencies and azimuthal wave numbers. This approach provides a more accurate understanding of vascular hemodynamics, with potential applications in predicting disease progression and improving clinical treatments.
