Trailing edge noise in wind turbines

In this project, we leverage the compressible capabilities of FELiCS to predict trailing edge noise in wind turbines. Our primary interest lies in identifying the coherent structures that are responsible for noise, which, contrary to intuition, are not necessarily the most energetic but are key to sound generation. Using global stability analysis and resolvent analysis, we gain insights into the noise-generating mechanisms within the flow. These analyses are further validated against highly resolved numerical simulations and experimental aeroacoustic measurements. FELiCS enables the use of an acoustic resolvent providing a deeper understanding of the amplification mechanisms. This capability is pivotal not only for noise prediction but also for adjoint-based airfoil shape optimization, opening new pathways to designing quieter and more efficient wind turbines.
